In a statewide survey of researchers, water management decision-makers, industry representatives and others, the most frequent request from stakeholders was better access to water-related data. In response, AWI designated the Arizona Hydrologic Information System (AHIS) as one of its priority projects. AHIS will be a one-stop resource for water-related data to link users to diverse information sources. It will connect government agencies, the three state universities, and databases developed and maintained by the private sector. Its user-friendly format and services will not only enable simple access but also allow manipulation of data to respond to complex questions.
AHIS development began as one of AWI’s four first year projects in 2006. In collaboration with the University of Arizona’s Center for Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas (SAHRA) developers and state agencies, we developed AZWells and ArizonaWater. In 2007 AWI funded the project to develop prototype web services – the ‘information backbone” of AWI - to connect with stored information. Researchers are now creating a web portal that will match these web services to data at the Salt River Project and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
