The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) announces a new national competition for the Early Career Scientist Program. This program seeks scientists of exceptional promise in all areas of basic biological and biomedical research, chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering that are directly related to biology or medicine. University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Division of Natural Sciences, Dept of Geology and Plantetary Sciences One-year, full-time visiting Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Geology and Planetary Sciences (an undergraduate department). Twelve contact-hour teaching load per semester. Courses to be taught inclue Physical Geology (with lab) and Earth, Climate, and Life through Time (non-lab, non-majors course on Earth Systems Science). Position to begin during last week of August 2008 and will end in early May 2009. Ph.D. in geology preferred, but ABD will be considered. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. The American Geological Institute (AGI) announces two full-time positions open in their Alexandria, VA office. AGI is a non-profit federation of 44 geoscience societies and they are looking for capable geoscience graduates to join AGI in their mission to serve the profession.   • Web Developer/IT Support position - Applicants should have several years of IT experience including web design, programming and end-user support. Demonstrable background with SQL databases, programming in PHP and/or C#/ASP, NET, and development of web sites are required. Experience with Windows and Linux, as well as Flash development is desirable. Responsibilities include overall maintenance of existing geosciences websites and applications as well as development of new projects. Some background in the geosciences is helpful. The applicant will be a member of AGI's Technology Department, and, as such, will work with the other staff on other IT support functions as needed.
  • Geoscience Workforce Analyst position - Position will be responsible for expansion of AGI's data collection and analysis efforts regarding all aspects of the geosciences profession. Candidate needs strong analytical and communication skills, attention to detail, and to be a proven self-starter. Statistics background and experience with relational database systems using SQL required. A Bachelor's degree in the geosciences and/or economics is required. Must be willing to travel. Familiarity with the resources industry a plus.

  • Environmental Defense currently seeks a Staff Engineer - Coastal Louisiana Project of its Land, Water and Wildlife Program The Staff Engineer will be responsible for working with other program staff to ensure that Environmental Defense is an active and consulted participant in science and engineering planning for restoration of the Mississippi River Delta wetlands as well as hurricane protection for coastal Louisiana communities. This will involve advising state, federal and university-sponsored efforts, working with EDF consultants and other non-profits to develop independent research and analysis, as well as the opportunity to produce original research and analysis. The Staff Engineer may also occasionally be involved in projects focused on other coastal and riverine resources in regions around the United States.
